standardized choropleth

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/

This is a standardized choropleth map showing the world's population density per square km.
A standardized choropleth doesn't use boundary lines (such as states or provinces).

choropleth map

http://www.water.usgs.gov

A choropleth map is a thematice map where areas are shaded (or patterned) in proportion to the measurement of the data variable being displayed on the map. This map shows the US freshwater use (in gallons per day per state) throughout the country. The most populated states (NY, CA, FL, TX, and IL) use the most.

DLG

http://oregonexplorer.info/craterlake/dlg.html

Digital Line Graph (DLG) is a digital vector data map. DLGs contain a wide variety of information depicting geographic features. This image, of Oregon’s Crater Lake Park.

DRG

http://tahoe.usgs.gov/GIS.html

Digital raster graphic (DRG) is a scanned image of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) standard series topographic map. This image is of Lake Tahoe.

Bivariate Choropleth Map

http://gis.esri.com/library/userconf/proc99/proceed/papers/pap171/p171.htm

A Bivariate choropleth map shows two different variable on a choropleth type map. For instance, this map shows the population by county AND the median house value by county in the state of Ohio.

nominal area choropleth map

This is a choropleth map using nominal data (different classes) showing the percentage of Latino/Hispanic citizens in Florida counties.

DOQQ

DOQQ (digital ortho quarter quads) are aerial photos that have been corrected so that the pixels are aligned with longitude and latitude lines, and have a narrowly defined region of coverage. This DOQQ image is of Louisiana.

similarity matrix

http://tomcat.esat.kuleuven.be/txtgate/tutorial.jsp

A similarity matrix is a matrix of scores which express the similarity between two data points. Most of this matrix is, indeed, similar except the bottom right hand corner.

correlation matrix

http://www.investors-routemap.co.uk/Guidebook_price_correlation.htm

A Correlation matrix describes correlation among variables. It is a square symmetrical matrix. The one shown is from an investment website showing the correlation between bonds and markets. The higher numbers are color coded in reds and oranges as "dangers".

star plot

http://start1.jpl.nasa.gov/caseStudies/autoTool.cfm

A star plot consists of a sequence of "spokes" (radii). Each spoke represents a different variable in the multivariate data set. The star plot I chose maps out the designs for the NASA space systems. Each colored line represents a different design method they used.

Parallel Coordinate Graph

A Parallel Coordinate Graph can be a little tricky to read. The up and down slopes of the lines indicates change through time from one value to the next. The lines in parallel coordinate displays don't indicate change. Instead, a single line in a parallel coordinates graph connects a series of values - each associated with a different variable - that measure multiple aspects of something.

portolan chart

http://pro.corbis.com/search/Enlargement.aspx?CID=isg&mediauid=DAAC78FA-5E2E-4FA6-BEB5-0A01656FB9CC

A portolan chart is an early modern European navigation chart, dating from the 13th century or later. This one is of Italy and Greece.

lorenz curve

http://www.divisionoflabour.com/archives/cat_misc.php

Originally developed for representing income distribution, the Lorenz curve usually shows percent of households vs the percent of income. The Lorenz curve is shown in red, while the "perfect equality" is shown in blue.

index value plot

http://www.galatime.com/2006/03/05/nifty-volatility-atr-at-historic-lows/

Index Value Plots are mostly found in the financial business atomospheres. This one is for the stock Nifty close ranging from the years 1995-2006 (yellow). The blue line represents the 14 day Average True Range.

triangular plot

A triangular plot is a map charting three variables with a constant sum. This triangular plot shows soil composition from the US Dept of Agriculture. One side represents sand, one side silt, and one side clay. Each side has a number scale for the variable composition.

bilateral graph

A bitlateral graph is a chart/map that shows data through two (sometimes more) related variables. This map shows two variables- one 30 yr fixed mortgage (blue) and one 30 yr fixed jumbo mortgage (green).

cartographic animation

(This image is only animated when you go to the link found below)

A cartographic animation is a hands-on animated map. Usually found online, you can usually click or roll your mouse over the map to animate the specific item.

This choropleth map shows Nebraska County and it's deaths by certain diseases (classed and unclassed data) in 1996. Scrolling over the key shows a change in different types of diseases on the map.

DEM

http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/coasts/data/oahu/dem.html

Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) use a raster grid that determine topographic elevation for a specific area.
This map shows the elevation of Hawaii's island - Oahu.

isobar

http://www.csulb.edu/~rodrigue/geog140/lectures/pressure.html

An isobar is a contour line of equal or constant pressure in meteorology. This is a map of isobars of pressure in New Zealand.

doppler radar

Doppler Radar uses pulses of microwave radiation to locate different types of precipitation in it's vicinity. I chose this doppler radar image because it was a hurricane in Florida that I personally experienced- Hurricane Charley in 2004.

statistical map

http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/gastat.htm

A statistical map shows a set of data (or statistics) for a specific area. This map shows the population change in the US per state from 1990-2000. The highest population change was in Nevada (66%) and the lowest was in D.C. going down 5.7%. The average US population rate went up 13%.

isopleth

http://www.ij-healthgeographics.com

An isopleth an a type of isoline that measures the pressure of a certain area. This is a map of the pressure measured in the state of North Carolina.

isohyet

http://www.environment.gov.au/soe/2001/publications/technical/wind-erosion/index.html

An isohyet is a type of isoline that shows the precipitation in a specific area. This map shows the isohyets in Australia (lines only... the colors represent the Dust Storm Index)

proportional circle map

http://www.statcan.ca/english/Estat/guide/map-mul.htm

A proportional circle map shows numerical data through a circle, usually the bigger the circle- the bigger the number. For instance, this map shows the population of Canada through the size of the circles. Each circle is located in the area where the most population is located in each province... the bigger the circle, the larger the population.

isotachs

www.srh.noaa.gov/.../GEMPAK_Q-vectors.html

Isotachs are a type of isoline that determine the wind speed. The vectors show direction. This map has green isotachs around the state of Florida.

LIDAR

Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) is a form of remote sensing that uses scattered light to find range and detect through lasers. This image is of Manhattan... taking right after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and show the rubble of the World Trade Center towers.

stem and leaf plot

A stem and leaf plot is an organizational way of mapping numerical data. The stem is the common digit at the beginning of the numbers and the leaf(s) is/are the ending digit(s).
For instance, this stem and leaf plot displays the ages at a family reunion. The first row shows 01, 08, 09 or 1, 8, 9. The second row shows 32, 34, 37, and so on.

PLSS map

PLSS maps come from the use of the Public Land Survey System. These rectangular land plots were divided up to let Public Domain Land benefit US citizens. This map shows Public Land in Minnesota.

population profile

Population profiles are a type of map that chart out the age vs the population in a specific location. A lot of the time they are split to show female population and male population separately. The profile I chose shows the amount of people in Botswana with AIDS projected for the year 2020.

isoline maps

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/atlas_mexico/mean_annual_precipitaion.jpg

An isoline map has lines (or curves) that connect two points with the same value. This map shows the annual rainfall precipitation for Mexico. You can see the connection between the rainfall and the mountainous areas.

cartograms

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://issrweb.asu.edu/images/gis/cartogram.gif&imgrefurl=http://issrweb.asu.edu/services/gis/sample-maps.html&h=416&w=660&sz=107&hl=en&start=26&sig2=fB2frQdQYVrzjawf4s0Tsg&um=1&tbnid=vh6gsgy3HDAPKM:&tbnh=87&tbnw=138&ei=6GOXSJOlDJSypgTT4PXmBg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcartograms%26start%3D18%26ndsp%3D18%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7SUNA%26sa%3DN

I think cartograms are really cool. They show a distorted view to show the information on the map. The one I found shows the population per county in the United States. The bigger areas shown are the denser metro areas (Florida, New York, and California).

dot distribution

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.biologie.uni-hamburg.de/b-online/ibc99/IDB/nrspecie.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.biologie.uni-hamburg.de/b-online/ibc99/IDB/afe.html&h=743&w=878&sz=64&hl=en&start=53&um=1&tbnid=5GaxxY7JB7rd0M:&tbnh=124&tbnw=146&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddot%2Bdistribution%2Bmaps%26start%3D36%26ndsp%3D18%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7SUNA%26sa%3DN

This dot distribution map caught my eye because each color dot represents a different number. This map shows the amount of vascular plants throughout Europe. The largest amount seems to be found in northern Italy and the surrounding areas.
