This topographic map illustrates a community located along a shoreline. Topographic maps show elevations of the land's surface (in feet above sea level) through the use of contour lines (these are the brown lines on this map). They trace points of equal elevation across the map, just like the one labeled "30" closest to the shore, as well as "50" found right behind it.
